As a business owner, one of my priorities is to stay curious about new ways to use my time and resources more effectively and efficiently. Recently I started exploring ways to re-purpose my written content in order to get it in front of as many people as possible. It’s been one of those “bright shiny objects” that keeps catching my attention.
Content creation is an ongoing task when maintaining and marketing an online business. It is such an important part of my business because I want to help people learn ways to grow their business and level up their website. Who doesn’t want web pages that sell, after all?
However, content creation can quickly become an overwhelming task. Perhaps you blog, have a social media presence on one or more platforms, and send emails to your audience. Do you create new, unique content for each content channel, or have you considered ways to refresh existing content?
If you want to optimize your time and resources, consider re-purposing your written content. There are dozens of ways you can reuse your content to make the most of your efforts. If you are unsure of how to go about re-purposing your written content, here are three ideas to get you started.
Idea #1: Create an e-book
If you regularly maintain a blog on your website you have a wealth on content sitting there for you to re-purpose. An easy way to re-purpose blog posts is to compile multiple posts about a related topic into one longer report or e-book.
You can use this new, larger piece of content as an opt-in gift for your email subscribers, a product you sell, or a mini-course. Some of these options will take more time than others, but you’ll be able to get a head start with content you already have.
Tip: Before you create a new piece of content from some of your blog posts, think through what you want to create and how you will use it. This will help you avoid putting in a lot of work for something that you don’t end up using.
Idea #2: Create an automated email challenge
Another way to use re-purpose written content is to created an automated email challenge. This is a great way to engage your audience and grow your email list.
Find blog posts (or past emails you’ve sent to your list) that are all about related topics. For example, in my business, my basic challenge outline might look something like this:
- Day 1 – How to Make a Standout Website Home Page
- Day 2 – The top 3 things you need on your about page
- Day 3 – How to optimize your service or product page for sales
The number of days is based on your preference and the amount of content you have about the topic you are making the challenge about.
As you create your challenge, consider adding in affiliate links and products and services you offer as they relate to the content. Keep the focus on helping your audience, but be mindful of where a product or service would offer additional value to the person taking the challenge.
Once you have the content ready to go, add it to your email provider in an automated email series that is triggered by a subscription form and start promoting it to your audience.
Idea #3: Create a Workbook
A third way to re-purpose your written content is to create a workbook. This type of content is popular because it allows your audience to absorb the content as take action. If creating a workbook sounds intimidating, read on for a few tips.
Collect a few articles, blog posts, long-form social media posts, or emails you’ve already created. Break the content down into 3-10 subheadings depending on how robust you want the workbook to be. For each section, add in the relevant content and brainstorm a few questions to ask the reader once they’ve finished that section.
Tip: Focus on asking questions that encourage readers to explore what they think about the topic, rather than simple “yes” or “no” questions. Here are a few examples:
- What’s holding you back from doing _______?
- How would ______ inspire you to try ______?
- What happened when you tried _______?
